A method is used for the mains and resistance braking of an asynchronous machine fed through a static converter with an intermediate circuit with superimposed current. There is a parallel circuit of a controllable mains current converter (1), a braking resistance (6) in series with a switch (7) and a thyristor adjuster (5). The system is intended for the braking of traction motors without any interruption on the current flow in the intermediate circuit of the converter and with adaptation of the braking resistance to the speed of the vehicle at the moment of braking. The system assures proper braking in the event of a supply failure.
