Continuous casting of killed steels - where molten steel in mould is magnetically stirred and scrubbed with inert gas

The quality of continuously cast prods. made from killed steels is improved by combinining the use of (a) a rotating electromagnetic field, which drives the molten steel in the mould round the centrla axis of the prod. being cast; with (b) the scrubbing of the rotating melt by an inert gas, esp. N2 or Ar. The rotary magnetic field is pref. created at the surface of the molten steel, and the inert gas fed through a pipe dipping into the melt, esp. at a depth of 10-100 mm. below the deepest point of the concave meniscus at the centre of rotation. Used to improve both the surface finish and the internal structure of the cast prods. obtd., and to improve, therefore, the quality of the prods. opbtd. by subsequent working of the cast steel billets.
