Mining machine pick assembly - has radial force bearing nearest tip and axial force bearing on shank both radial to pick axis

The mining machine pick has a holder fitted with roller or ball bearings to allow the tool to rotate. The pick (1) is carried by a bearing (3) arranged towards the tip of the pick to absorb radial forces, and additionally by a bearing (6) at the end of the tool shank to absorb axial forces. Both bearings are radial to the axis of the pick (1). It is also possible to arrange the bearing nearest the tip radially to the pick axis as compared with the bearing at the shank which should then be axial w.r.t. the tool axis. The bearing nearest the tip is a slide bearing to take up the radial forces arising in service.
