A waste compactor (1) has flaps which accept the waste in the open position. They close hydraulically and precompress the waste. The compression piston moves upwards under hydraulic power and moves the precompressed material in the direction of the container opening and thus effects a further precompression. The pressure piston moves hydraulically downwards and effects the main compression at the precompressed material. With the aid of the compression piston, it then delivers the intensely compressed waste into the container. Specifically, the waste compacter compresses bulk material up to one thirty sixth of its initial volume while the pre- and main compression are effected after each other and in one work cycle in the waste compactor. More specifically, the waste is filled into an opening at 1200mm. x 1200mm. An electronic proximity switch automatically switches on the hydraulic system at a given filled level and the system starts it work cycle.
