The mechanism is for stacking cups, having a conveyor between the receiving and stacking stations and in which the cups are transported between the parallel runs of endless belts. The conveyor is in two or more sections running at different speeds. In one at least of the conveyor sections (C, D) there is a descending stage (F, F2) in which the cups (30) are briefly released by the belts (50-55) so as to allow their position to be corrected automatically under gravity. The stages can be formed at the transfer points between different sets of belts, the later ones being set lower down than the earlier ones at these points.
