The wheel or rotating component is scanned by a pick-up which generates a series of signals proportional to the speed of rotation. An electric measurement variable is generated by the measuring device corresponding to the reciprocal of the speed of rotation. This variable is compared with values corresponding to speed intervals in a specified speed measurement range, previously determined by approximation straight lines. They are weighted by a first specified factor determined by the selected approximation line in the respective interval. The twin complement is produced from the weighted variable, and weighted by a second factor, so that the product of the two weighting factors is equal to the slope of the approximation line.
