Compacting metal powder into green mouldings such as strip - using deformable side walls to prevent breakage of the strip edges

A layer of powder is formed with its edges confined by deformable side walls. A compacting press. is then applied and the side walls are reduced in thickness together with the layer of powder byt prevent the sideways movement of the powder. The side walls are pref. made of an elastomer; a ductile material; Cu, Al and/or their alloys. The side walls may have the same compsn. as the powder and be permanently embedded in the layer. Compacting pressure can be applied by rolls, powder being fed through the roll gap between two endless elastomer belts forming the side wall. An inexpensive method of compacting metal powder, e.g. into continuous strip, where the edgese of the strip are efficiently compacted so they are not subject to breakage or crumbling.
