The unit (1) has motor-driven rotating cutters installed in a waste pipe (5), a switch (2) being provided between the electric mains supply (3) and the motor which switch is closed by a pressure sensor (4) upstream of the mains water tap (6). Such that the unit is switched-on as a result of the pressure drop obtained when the tap is opened. The sensor is set such that the switch is only closed when the pressure drop exceeds a pre-determined level so that the water jet emerges with a given force.
