Prepn. of (1) proplyfatty acids, (I), esp. dimers and trimers of higher unsatd. fatty acids, or of (2) maleic anhydride-fatty acid adducts (II), takes place by passing 8-22C ethylenically unsatd. fatty acids, opt. in combination with maleic anhydride, over a catalyst bed of synthetic SiO2Al2O3 (pref. wt. ratio 0.4-0.1), impregnated with H3PO4 pref. of 150-330 degrees C. (I) resist freezing at low temps. and retain a high degree of viscosity and are used in prepn. of paints, surfactants, rust-inhibiting oil additives, lubricant additives and in synthetic high polymers. (II) are used in coating compsns., lacquers, paints, sizes for paper and as dispersants for plastics. Catalyst allows continuous polymerisation or adduct formation, H3PO4 inhibits formation of metal soaps; homogeneous prods. are obtd., lower temps. and shorter reaction times are used, resulting in reduced discolouration.
