Bromoacetic acid is obtained by reacting an aqueous solution of chloroacetic acid and an alkali bromide or ammonium bromide with concentrated sulphuric acid. The acid is added is such a manner that the temperature is 40 to 70 DEG C. The reaction mixture is heated and, simultaneously water is removed. Bromoacetic esters having a bactericidal activity are obtained by adding to the above reaction mixture an azeotrope-forming organic solvent before heating and an alcohol before, during or after heating.
