Glass compsns. contg. ingredients which volatilise at low temps. are divided into two parts, the first part contg. the high melting components and the second part the low melting components. The high m.pt. components are heated to above the m.pt. and the low temp. m.pt. components then added while the temp. is allowed to fall to just above the new softening point. The process is esp. applicable to glass fibre compsns. contg. B2O3, F and sodium borate. Loss of the low m.pt. components by volatilisation is much reduced, together with pollution of the atmosphere, and precantious needed to avoid such pollution with consequent savings in capital and running costs.
