The chopper (10) has a housing (12) with a front, back and peripheral (18) side, enclosing a cutter disc (20) on a shaft. The cutter disc (20) has slits in (23) in the direct vicinity of which are blades on the front cutting surface. The back of the chopper (20) disc has shovel-type blades (26) near the circumference. An inlet hole (30) for the wood being cut leads into the housing (12). The chopper disc (20) divides the chopper machine into a back and front compartment by means of an annular partition or strip (32). The back compartment takes the hips passing through the blade slits. The front compartment takes the small bits of tree not chopped up, passing through between the disc and the front side. Separate outlets lead from the compartments.
