Strip and wire with superconducting core - comprising copper rolled with niobium and bronze strips

Multilayer strip and wire, superconducting at low temps. e.g.4 degrees K, esp. strip contg. Nb3Sn, consisting of a metal substrate coated with one constit. of the intermettalic cpd., and inter. layer of stabilising material, pref. Cu, Al, Ag and Au, and a layer of the second constit. The superconducting alloy is formed by diffusion, during heat-treatment, along the length and in the centre of the composite strip which can thus be bent without cracking the brittle alloy, and the Nb3Sn produced is fine-grained. The coatings may be applied by rolling, electroplating, vacuum-deposition or simultaneous extrusion.
