Fluoride-free magnesium chloride based salt - for refining and covering light alloy melts

Fluoride-free MgCl2-contg. refining and covering salt for light metals and alloys during melting esp. for magnesium alloys whereby the salt contains 2-20% MgO and an equilibrium amount of CaCl2. Process avoids the use of toxic fluorides. The MgCl2 is prepd. from a crystal contg. water of crystallisation mixed with a propn. of other additives such as alkali (ne earth) metal oxides esp. CaO and is dried at 100-220 degrees C and melted.
