An electric arc furnace is charged in a continuous operation with a mixt. composed of sintered pellets obtd. by calcining Cr ore under reducing conditions, the pellets being those from which 80-50 mole % oxygen bound to Fe and Cr components was removed and these two components are present in acid soluble form, and from which 20-50 mole % oxygen was not removed, remaining in the form of acid insoluble oxides of these two components free of C, and a particulate C-contg. reducing substance of 100 mm size of which =70 wt. % is 20-100 mm, which is present in amt. of 0.7-1.4 times that required stoichiometrically for reducing the oxides of Fe and Cr to Fe7C3 and Cr7C3. The furnace is operated with a submerged electric arc. Less electrical energy is required for process operation.
