The device consists of a vertical rod detachably mounted on the table at which the patient sits. The upper end of the rod has a chin rest which is adjustable to a position immediately below the patient's chin and just touching it when he or she is in the correct position, i.e. with chin and stomach tucked in and sitting erect. The chin rest can be in the form of a flexible tongue towards the patient and tending to slip away if the chin is rested on it, or it can hinge on an axis parallel to the shoulders, being spring-loaded into the initial position. The base for the rod can be secured by means of a clamping screw.
