Dihydro-dithiinyl-and-oxathiinyl-methyl cephalosporins - with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity

Cephalosporin derivs of formula (I) and their salts are new: (where one of A and A1 is O or S and the other is S; R1 is H, acetoxy, 5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-ylthio or 1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrazol-5-ylthio and R2 is COOH, or R1 is pyridino and R2 is COO). Cpds (I) are broad-spectrum antibacterials, e.g. active against penicillin sensitive Staph. aureus strains in concns of 0.01-50 mu g/ml and against penicillin-resistant Staph. aureus strains and E. coli (Monod strain) in concns of 0.1-50 mu g/ml.
