Static DC supply for inductive loads - provides rapid discharge of load circuit in fault conditions, and has thyristor bridge

The static direct current power supply is used for inductive loads, particularly for the field windings of synchronous machines, and the design is intended to allow rapid interruption of the supply in case of breakdown of the load. The supply unit has a basic transformer and bridge rectifiers consisting of an arrangement of thyristors. Switching is achieved using two circuits, one providing interruption of DC from the bridge, by breaking connection to the transformer primary, the second enabling the rapid discharge of the energy stored in the load. Overload demands beyond a given threshold operate the thyristor gates of the bridge, the load being similarly discharged.
