An equipment for quadraphonic transmission of sound uses three or four channels. The equipment has four microphones (1, 2, 3, 4) located at the corners of a diamond shape. The four separate signals from the microphones (1, 2, 3, 4) are supplied to quadrophonic encoder (5) which generates a multiplexed signal. The multiplexed signal is transmitted by an installation (6) and decoded by a decoder (7). The sounds are reproduced by four loudspeakers (8, 9, 10, 11) located at the corners of a square. These loudspeakers (8, 9, 10, 11) receive dual composite signals and form phantom sound sources (12, 13, 14, 15) at the corners of a diamond shape.
