Nicotinic acid salts of formula (I) (where R1-3 are H, methyl, ethyl, propyl or isopropyl), e.g. p-aminobenzoic acid 2-diethylaminoethyl ester nicotinate, are new cpds. (I) have the capacity to permeate cell (esp. nerve cell) membranes and become involved in cell regeneration metabolism. They are more active in this respect that procaine or p-nicotinamidobenzoic acid diethylaminoethyl ester. (I) are particularly useful in the treatment of ageing diseases; their effect in improvising learning and memory is particularly marked. Specifically claimed are (I: R1=H R2=R3=H); (I;R1=Me, R2=R3=H); and (I; R1=R2Me, R3=H). (I) are prepd. by reacting the ester with nicotinic acid in water or in an organic solvent. Pref. organic solvents are MeOH, EtOH, i-PrOH, acetone, CHCl3, CCl4 and trichloroethylene.
