A refuse compactor has a compression chamber (1) which may be rectangular in shape, with open ends, inside which reciprocates a plate shaped compression member (2) underneath a feed opening (9) in the top face. The operation is continuous, with no loss of time during strokes, the material being discharged in turn from each end. The compression plate is moved by an actuator cylinder (5) at each end, the two cylinders being mounted outside on the opposite sides of the chamber. The two open ends (7, 8) can fit into openings in the walls (13, 14) of structures where the compressed charges are baled.
