The lazy-tongs action lifting mechanism is for use between a lower chassis and an overhead maintenance platform, and comprises paris of parallel arms (20a, 20b) joined together at a central pivot points (38). At the ends, each pair is attached to the next one by swan-neck pieces (58, 62), so that the pivot axis is offset from the arm centre line and that when folded the adjacent arms lie flat against each other. Of the two lowermost pairs of arms, one (20a) slides in the chassis and the other (20b) pivots on it. Cross-members (68) are mounted between one pair of the lowermost arms and also between those in the pair immediately above, and coupled to each other by a vertical lifting ram (70). On lifting this forces the cross-members apart, although they both move upwards.
