Problems of non reproducibility of spectra due to poor stability of a luminous source in an interferometer for Fourier transform spectrometry are overcome to enable simultaneous recording of interferograms of the source only and the source plus sample being investigated. A large area spherical convex mirror (Cc) is mounted in an interferometer and a small spherical concave mirror (Cv) is mounted on a piezo electric element to enable it to be displaced. Construction of the piezo electric element ensures that displacement is proportional to applied voltage with a high degree of precission to give required reproducibility. The sample under investigation is moved into and out of the path of the luminous beam in a time equal to the movement time of the large mirror to produce interference patterns.
