The powders are prepd. by 'spray roasting' a salt of a metal capable of forming oxides suitable for polishing applications. The oxide or oxide mixt. obtd. is pulverised if necessary and the usual polishing additives are incorporated. Spray roasting of CeCl3 soln. to oxide gives a prod. of polishing efficiency 10. Max. on DIN 58750 scale. Spray roasting (spraying of soln. into heated chamber as in spray drying) of suitable salts, partic. Ce salts, gives polishing powders with a narrow range of particle size and of optimal granular form.
