In order to melt precious metals, and in particular for dental prostheses, an oven is used which comprises a muffle (11) and a mould-holder cylinder (20) which are adjacent one another. The muffle is provided with an electrical resistor (14) for heating a crucible (16), whereas the mould-holder cylinder contains a mould (21), such that when the crucible and mould which are integral with one another are tilted by 180 DEG about a common axis (X), the molten metal in the crucible passes into the casting well (26) of the mould. During the stage of melting and tilting, both the crucible and the mould are connected to a vacuum generator component by means of the pipes (41, 36) and (41, 38) respectively, whereas when tilting is completed, there is actuated a switch (35) which connects the crucible, which is disposed above the mould, to a pressure generating component, by means of pipes (43, 36), whereas the vacuum is maintained below the mould. The said features prolong the vacuum stage in order to eliminate all the gases and impurities contained in the molten metal mass, and to assist entry of the molten metal mass into the recesses in the mould, in order to occupy all the free space therein.
