Shaft axial face seal with floating seal rings - having surface contact only at lands adjacent inner diameter

Axial face seal for shafts has two rings (4, 5) floatingly mounted on the shaft and a housing respectively. Each seal ring is centred by a resilient O-ring (11) and is supported against rotation relative to the shaft or housing, respectively, by an axial pin (10). The seal ring on the housing is spring biased against the seal ring on the shaft. Each seal ring has next to its inner diameter an axially facing land square with the ring axis. The square land is followed, radially outwardly, by a slightly conical face giving rise to a gap of increasing width between the two rings. The gap accommodates any possible articulation between the seal rings.
