Mortar shell with sealing ring - has plastic ring in sections secured by nylon cord and ejected with shell

The shell is used in a mortar with a rifled internal surface. A sealing ring is fitted to prevent excess leakage of gases, due to the firing clearance. The ring (10) fits around the body of the shell and is made from plastic. Its cross section provides a lip and a cord groove (16). Each ring is in two or more segments, with the joints (14') angled and interlocked. They are positioned by internal ribs in recesses in the shell body, the segments held together by a Nylon (RTM) cord (15). This is ruptured during firing, the segments being ejected with the shell.
