The vice with a clamping force amplifier and limiting mechanism enables high clamping forces to be deployed with precision. The amplifier uses two worms (12, 13) which displace in opposite directions on a common axis to operate quadruped (17, 18, 23, 24) pinned-lever effort multiplication mechanisms (11). The worms (12, 13) locate on inversely threaded lengths of a rotatable drive (14) shaft, and twin quadruped lever systems (11) locating in diametric opposition are deployed. The lever systems are of 'X' form with each leg individually pinned (21, 22, 25, 26) onto a square node block (16). Two of the adjacent legs (17, 18) of each system (11) extend from the node block (16) to the worms (12, 13). The other two legs (23, 24) are shorter than the worm levers (17, 18) and are pinned (27, 28) to the haunch of the mobile jaw (4) and a static abutment block (5).
