The rotary spit is for cooking over an open hearth (6) and rotates automatically under the affects of heat from the hearth. The split rod (3, 4, 5) is a freely rotating horizontal cantilever, and adopts a convex longitudinal form when subject to the hearth heat from below. The deformation is the result of differential temperatures through the rod section and associated differential longitudinal expansions. The raising of the centre of gravity of the rod causes a continuous slow correcting rotation of the spit. The supported end (3) of the cantilever is mounted on a series of housed (1)ball bearing races and the rod is subdivided longitudinal into two sections.
