The gas water heater consists of a burner (1) heating a water coil (2). A magnet (3) is mounted on the end of the valve (7) which controls the main gas supply and is sealed by bellows(4). An armature (5) is mounted over the magnet and is connected by a thermally conductive link(6). In normal operation the main valve is held open by the magnet attracted to the armature. When the operating temperature is exceeded the magnet goes beyond its curie point and the valve is released and closes the gas supply.
