The needle-type printing head has the needle printing ends almost against each other, each being actuated by a solenoid to strike the surface to be printed. The needles are distributed in several flat layers (111, 112) converging towards this surface (17). There may be two such layers, converging at an angle of 8 deg., and the solenoids actuating the needles may be mounted at right angles to them, and staggered along them in the lengthwise direction. The needles can be guided by grooves in the enclosing housings, and typically formed in ribs in the housings. The housings can also accommodate the solenoids, which are secured to them by stirrups.
