An arrangement of sets of tubes inside a heat exchanger has one set bent in a manner which permits differential expansion so that excessive stresses are avoided. The other set (2) has U-shapes tubes with horizontal entry and outlet portions, connected by vertical portions. These are parallel to portions of the first set. The first set has vertical portions (8) parallel to those of the second set, and the whole of the tubes are positioned inside the second set. These portions are of decreasing length through the stack. These ends (7, 9 etc.) are also in a horizontal plane, and these horizontal parts are L-shaped.
