1456272 Topical compositions containing papaverine alkaloids J J VOORHEES 14 Jan 1974 [16 Jan 1973 17 Dec 1973] 01739/74 Heading A5B Topical pharmaceutical compositions for the treatment of proliferating skin diseases in the form of ointments, lotions, pastes, jellies, sprays, aerosols or bath oils comprise, as an active ingredient, a compound of the formula or a pharmacologically acceptable acid addition salt thereof, wherein X is carbonyl, methylene or a valence bond; R 1 is hydroxy, methoxy, ethoxy or ethyl; R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are each hydrogen, hydroxy, methoxy or ethoxy; R 5 is hydrogen or ethoxy; R 6 is hydrogen or methyl; and either the bonds indicated by dotted lines in ring A are present and R 7 is absent, or the bonds indicated by dotted lines in ring A are absent and R 7 is hydrogen or methyl; in association with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. The active ingredient may be papaverine, ethaverine, octaverine, 1-benzyl- 6, 7-dimethoxyisoquinoline, 3-ethyl-1-benzyl-6, 7-dimethoxyisoquinoline, papaveraldine, codamine, laudanine, laudanosine, paveril or norlaudanosoline. The compositions may also contain a glucocorticoid e.g. hydrocortisone and triamcinolone.
