S by passing a mixture of hydrocarbon vapour and steam at a preheating temperature greater than 250‹ C. under atmospheric or super-atmospheric pressure and at a space velocity of 1-5 kg of hydrocarbon per litre of catalyst per hour, over a nickel catalyst maintained at 300-500‹ C. by the heat of reaction, which catalyst has been made by precipitating Ni 6 Al 2 (OH) 16 . CO 3 . 4H 2 O from aq. solution, drying the precipitate at 80-180‹ C., raising the temperature to a calcination temperature of 300-550‹ C. at 1À22-4À11‹ C./min, calcining and reducing in H 2 at 300-500‹ C. Examples describe the cracking of naphtha and in some the product gas is also contacted with a second bed of a catalyst as described above.
