1468885 Heart valves USA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH EDUCATION and WELFARE SECRETARY OF 20 March 1974 12327/74 Heading F2V [Also in Divisions A5 and G3] An atrioventricular valve, for controlling flow of blood from the left atrium 60 to the left ventricle 61 of an artificial replacement heart (see Divisions A5-A6), comprises a rigid circular disc 7 having a plurality of elongated openings 63, each opening being overlaid with a flexible flap 64 having embedded therein a metal stay, the flaps being hingedly secured to the disc 7 and being substantially the same shape as but slightly larger than the openings 63 so as to completely cover the openings in the closed position. A branch-off 65 of the left ventricle 61 is provided with a tricuspid valve 66, the valve 66 having three slits or channels in its upper surface to allow for the passage of blood therethrough.
