1476849 Nuclear reactors VSES TEPLOTEKHNI CHE N I INST IM FE DZERZHINSKOGO 5 June 1975 [5 June 1974] 24317/75 Heading G6C A system to mitigate the effects of an accident involving leakage of water at high temperature and pressure from the cooling system 4 of a nuclear reactor 3 comprises a container 2 surrounding the reactor and its cooling system and communicating with a second container 9 via a bubbling device 10 and a non-return valve 18; on escape of reactor coolant, steam forces air from container 2 into container 9 and the escaping steam is condensed at 10, thus creating reduced pressure in container 2; condensation is assisted by sprinkler 19. Condensed water collects in sump 23 and may be purified and used for sprinkler 19. In modifications, Figs. 2-4 (not shown): a plurality of condensers 10 are connected to a common container 9 inside which is arranged the container 2; a plurality of condensers 10 is provided, each one of which is connected to a separate container 9; several containers 9 have a group of condensers 10 and non-return valves 18 associated with each container.
