The cradle may comprise several lengths joined end to end and is of a U- section. The point 2 is fixed in a channel 6 in the cradle base and the wing rails 3 slide transversely on flat surfaces 7 located on either side. The wing rails 3 have their feet machined off at the throat to increase their flexibility, and are moved by rods 11 connected to the switch control linkage. In a modification; Fig. 6 (not shown) the point is omega sectioned with the horizontal flanges forming the flat surfaces in which the wing rails slide. In a further embodiment Figs. 7 to 11 (not shown) the point 2 slides transversely within the cradle the edges of which are box sectioned and form the running rails of the frog. The positioning of the point within the cradle in this embodiment is determined by co-operating detents on the point and the cradle.
