Casting.-Relates to the manufacture of railway rails, points, and frogs or crossings, and consists in casting them from manganese steel and then subjecting the castings to a special heat treatment to render them tough and suitable for rolling or forging. The manganese steel is cast into ingots of the desired shape, a large shrinking or feeding-head being provided in the top of the mould. This feeding-head is formed in sand, and the ingot proper in an iron mould ; the upper portion of the ingot mould being made of larger cross-sectional area than the bottom portion. The ingot casting so made is stated to be perfectly sound and pipeless.
