A voltmeter having adjustable set limits (high and/or low) read by a contactless sensor, e.g. photo-electric, inductive or capacitive, may provide a signal via relays arranged to cut out the adjuster and/or to cut out any motor-driven anode raising/lowering device. An audible alarm coupled with visual indication of the faulty cell may be given. The automatic adjuster may be of the protective or operational (i.e. maintaining optimum working conditions) kind.
