The breakwater unit comprises a block-shaped hollow vessel with windows in two opposite sides above upright edges (3, 4). One or more floats (2a, 2b, 2c) are secured to the vessel (1) so as to keep it buoyant, while inside it there are baffles (12, 12a). Connector members (9, 10, 11) secure the unit to similar other ones at each end. The baffles can be pipes, arranged vertically to a set pattern. The latter can be a diamond, the distance between the pipes in a direction parallel to the windows being greater than in that at right angles to them. Near the window facing away from the incoming waves there can be a set of pipes closer together than those in the diamond pattern.
