An installation for making boxless moulds which consist of a series of identical mould sections of sand or similar material, placed accurately against each other, includes a modelling chamber. In this the mould sections are produced by pressing the sand between two opposing model plates. A stringing section is adjacent to the pressing zone, and in this, the mould section ejected one behind the other, are aligned in a row, against each other on a guide track. An additional transporting arrangement provides for the movement in steps corresp. to the rate of their prodn, of the row of mould sections along a track leading through a casting zone and a cooling zone. The track supporting the weight of the mouldings is, at least in the cooling zone, stationary, and the additional means of transport consist of compressed air feeds for the creation of an air cushion to support the string of mould sections, at least whilst they are being moved exclusively by the force of the ejector in the modelling chamber. The air cushion is formed by a boxlike stationary track, the upper surface of which has air outlets connected to a compressed air supply. The boxlike track is divided into compartments laid out one behind the other lengthways, and connected individually to the compressed air supply. The surface of the track has, over the range in which the air cushion is to be formed, a lengthways running groove edge strip, or rib, which fits the profile of the mould sections. Between the track and the string of mould section there is a belt which is driven via the mould sections by the ejector. A simple means, without expensive separately driven equipment of moving the row of mould sections with heavy castings along an extended casting and cooling track is provided. The press plunger does not have to exert and excessive load so that the sand is not powdered. Investment costs and operating costs are reduced.
