Granular refractory material for firebricks, etc. - mfd. by pelleting powdered oxide(s) and/or carbonate(s) of magnesium and/or calcium; sintering and comminuting into granules
Preferred powdered oxides and/or carbonates of calcium and/or magnesium are intimately mixed, opt. with a binder and the mixt. is formed into briquettes or pellets. The briquettes are sintered in an oven at =1700 degrees C and the sintered briquettes are comminuted and sieved to the required particle size. The resulting granular materials are formed into the required shape, e.g. refractory bricks, by pressing and the shaped articles are sintered. The process gives stable refractory products with a high density, low porosity and good structure. No special pressing methods are necessary to produce the granular masses or the fire resistant bricks. The process allows bricks contg. large amts. of magnesite (MgO) to be made.
