Spudding-in pile for anchoring a vessel, partic. an offshore drilling rig is raised and lowered by a hoist in a guide mounted on the vessel. The guide tilts in a support fixed to the vessel under the action of a horizontal winch, and one or more flexible componentS, e.g. a rope, runs between a point on the guide below the level of the winch and one on the pile above the guide. The rope is reeved round a pulley etc. below the level of the winch and mounted on the vessel. The pile can be lifted by a rope from a winch on the vessel, reeved rund a pulley near the first-named winch, and engaging with the lower part of it.
