The system enables a three-dimensional item to be drawn in a dimensionally accurate plan view free from perspective errors. It uses measuring (15) and drawing (9) instruments moving simultaneously in corresponding directions in the same plane, or different planes, at a constant distance apart. The measuring instrument measures the strength of a ray of light passing through a spot on the item from its background, and is so moved in relation to the item (1) that it measures a predetermined area of the item completely as the item and background are moved. The functioning of the drawing instrument is controlled so that its stroke is in proportion to the ray strength measured.
