1382714 Laminates KIMBERLY-CLARK CORP 13 July 1972 32884/72 Heading B5N A multiply creped paper sheet, e.g. towelling, comprises opposed outer webs each embossed with lands which border recess areas providing bulked sheet areas between the lands and which recesses are less stressed than the lands, the lands of each outer web projecting toward and crossing transversely the lands of the other outer web and bridging internal recesses of the other web, adhesive being interposed between the lands of the webs to unite and form the webs into the sheet to inhibit extension of the bridged recess areas and to limit sheet extension. In Fig. 1, creped paper 1 is passed through nip 3 formed by resilient roll 2 and metal embossing roll 4, adhesive 7, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, is applied to the upstanding embossments having surfaces 6 by means of pick-up roll 11, doctor roll 10 and transfer roll 9 and at nip 5 it is united with a second creped paper web 12 fed round soft rubber roll 13 and between nip 16 formed with embossing steel roll 14. Rolls 4 and 14 are ribbed rolls provided with spirally arranged lands and recesses extending around the axis thereof and rotate in opposite directions so that the lands of each of the rolls extend in crossing relation. In an alternative arrangement adhesive is also applied to the upstanding embossments of web 12 and a third creped paper web is fed between embossed outer webs 1 and 12 at nip 5. Embossing rolls 4 and 14 may alternatively have lands in the shape of parallelograms or sinusoidal waves.
