AbstractA novel total synthesis of 11-methyl steroids,utilizing readily available and inexpensive raw materials,is described. The procedure involves the additions of anorganometallic compound and an appropriately substitutedcyclopentane to an .alpha.-tetralone, with subsequent reductionsto achieve the desired 11-methyl steroid. The resultingproducts are useful pharmacological agents possessing,for example, selective hormonal properties.
