An apparatus to exercise th leg muscles of bed ridden patients has a frame placed on to the bed on which a foot base is fitted capable of swivelling in relation to the frame and which is horizontally adjustable against the force of a return spring. The foot base (24) is connected on both sides through one spiral spring each (26) with the frame (12, 14). The frame is made with a horizontal base plate and two vertical side walls lying opposite each other and the spiral springs are in each case located vertically in a recess of the corresponding side wall with their inner end attached to a bolt projecting from the corresponding side wall and with their outer end fitted to a slider (20) which is horizontally adjustable in relation to the frame.
