1307909 Cutting dies; moulding cutting element supports WESTERN PRINTING MACHINERY CO 6 April 1970 [7 April 1969] 16278/70 Headings B4B and B5A [Also in Division B6] An arcuate die 12, Fig. 1, for forming blanks from sheet material comprises rules 16 each having a working edge 18 for engaging the sheet material and a base portion 34, Fig. 2, opposite to the working edge, and moulded base means 14 encompassing and bonded to the base portions of the rules to support them. The base means may be cylindrical or, as shown, part cylindrical, in which case a plurality of dies 12 is supported on a cylinder 10 of a rotary or oscillatory die-cutting apparatus. Each die 12 comprises a plurality of rules 16 arranged to cut and/or crease a carton blank of a particular pattern. In one method of making the die the rules 16 are supported in the desired pattern by spacer blocks 28 arranged on a mould form 24. The upstanding base portions of the rules are covered by an inner mould part 24SP1/SP and plastic material, e.g. epoxy resin, is poured or injected between the parts 24, 24SP1/SP and allowed to cure or set to form the base means 14. The rules 16 have apertures 42 and notches in their base portions 34 to permit the flow of the plastics material and to hold them in the base means. The plastics material may include a filler such as fibre glass, or silica or metal chips. The portions of the rules in contact with the base means may be coated before the moulding step with a bonding agent.
