The protective system is for buried cables, produced from cheap materials and easy to install to produce an inexpensive system. Each covering section (12) is formed from an old motor tyre opened out to lie flat. The outer walls are provided with cuts so as to produce a number of projecting tabs (12) when the opened out tyre is laid flat over the cable. A similar trough may be used if required under the cables so that it is enclosed between the two units. The cable may then be laid in a trench (15) with a sand bed (16) laid along the lower surface. The cables themselves may be for power lines or telephones (17).
