The distance measuring device is mounted on a railway vehicle. It is used for measuring optically the distance between the measuring unit on vehicle and the upper or side face of each rail (8). This system analyses the relative position of two rails from the vehicle moving on the track and checks track straightness. The image projection focuses the image of a light source and aligns it along an axis intersecting the face of the rail. The reflected image is focussed in the receiver. The position of the reflected image is measured for the distance of the image projector from rail surface. The intersecting axis and optical axis are situated in a plane projecting along the rail. The reflected light receiver has photocells spaces in a direction across that in which the image is received. The image is projected, according to the change of the distance between the image projecting and rail face, on different photocells.
